FSSAI License Renewal Process Step by Step — Complete 2026 Guide

Your FSSAI license has an expiry date — and missing it means fines, platform suspension, and operating illegally. This guide tells you exactly when to renew, what documents you need, how to apply online, and what happens if you're late.

Rule of thumb: Apply for renewal at least 30 days before expiry for Basic Registration, and 45 days before expiry for State and Central licenses. Do not wait until the last week.
30Days before expiry — apply for Basic renewal
45Days before expiry — apply for State / Central
₹100Basic renewal fee per year
5 yrsMaximum renewal validity at once

Every FSSAI registration and license comes with a fixed expiry date — 1 to 5 years from the date of issue, depending on the validity you chose when you first applied. When that date passes, your license is void. You are no longer legally permitted to operate your food business, and every delivery platform will suspend your listing.

The good news: renewal is simpler than the original application. You already have your documents, your business is established, and the process is familiar. The only risk is doing it too late.

When to Renew — The Exact Timeline

FSSAI law requires you to apply for renewal before your license expires. The exact timing depends on your license type:

60+ days before expiry — Ideal

Best time to start your renewal

Apply here and you have zero stress. Plenty of time for documents, portal processing, and FSO inspection if required. No risk of any gap in your license validity.

30

30–60 days before expiry — On time

Minimum recommended window for Basic Registration

Sufficient time for Basic Registration renewal (7–10 days processing). Tight but manageable for State License if documents are ready. FosCos.org can expedite within this window.

!

15–30 days before expiry — Urgent

Still possible but requires immediate action

Basic Registration can still be renewed in time. State License renewal at this stage risks a gap in coverage. Call FosCos.org immediately — we treat this as a priority case.

Under 15 days or already expired — Critical

Platform suspension risk is immediate

You are in or approaching illegal operation territory. Swiggy and Zomato may already be flagging your listing. Call FosCos.org now — +91 97184 50031 — this is a same-day priority.

Pro tip Set a reminder in your phone the moment you receive your FSSAI certificate — 45 days before the expiry date printed on it. FosCos.org also sends renewal reminders to all clients we've registered. If we registered your license, expect a call from us before your expiry date.

What Happens If Your FSSAI License Expires

An expired FSSAI license is treated exactly the same as having no license at all under Indian food safety law. The consequences are immediate and serious:

❌ If you miss renewal

Operating your food business is illegal from the day of expiry — even for one day

Swiggy and Zomato periodically verify license status and suspend expired listings

FSSAI inspections can result in fines up to ₹5,00,000

You lose the continuous compliance record that builds trust with platforms

Reactivating a suspended platform listing takes 5–10 additional days

✓ If you renew on time

Continuous legal operation with no gap in your food business compliance

Your Swiggy and Zomato listing stays live without interruption

No fines, no penalties, no platform suspension

Your renewed certificate issues with the same FSSAI number — no change to platform listings

Peace of mind for the next 1 to 5 years

Renewal by License Type

License typeApply how earlyProcessing timeFSO inspection?Govt fee/year
Basic Registration 30 days before 7–10 working days No ₹100
State FSSAI License 45 days before 30–45 working days Usually yes ₹2,000–5,000
Central FSSAI License 45–60 days before 45–60 working days Usually yes ₹7,500
Good news for renewal If you are renewing a State or Central license and your business details, address, and food products have not changed since your original application, the FSO inspection for renewal is typically quicker and less intensive than the initial inspection. Many renewals pass without a physical visit if all documents are in order.

Documents Required for FSSAI Renewal

Basic Registration renewal

Current FSSAI certificate — your existing registration document
Valid photo ID proof — Aadhaar, PAN, or Voter ID (must still be valid)
Updated address proof — electricity bill or rent agreement (not older than 3 months)
Cancelled cheque from your current bank account

State / Central License renewal (additional documents)

Updated business registration proof — GST certificate, MOA/AOA, or partnership deed
Fresh water test report — from an FSSAI-approved lab, not older than 6 months
Updated food product list — if your menu or products have changed since original registration
Kitchen layout plan — same as original or updated if premises have changed
Annual turnover declaration — to confirm you're in the right license category
Address or business change? If your kitchen address, business name, or food product categories have changed since your original registration, you need to file a modification alongside your renewal — not just a standard renewal. FosCos.org handles combined modification + renewal as a single process. Call us if anything has changed.

How to Renew Online — Step by Step

1

Log in to the FoSCoS portal

Visit foscos.fssai.gov.in and log in with your registered mobile number and OTP. Use the same account you used for your original application.

2

Go to "My Licenses" and find your certificate

From your dashboard, click "My Licenses / Registrations." Find your active license and click the "Apply for Renewal" button next to it.

3

Review and update your business details

The renewal form will pre-fill your existing business information. Review every field carefully. Update any details that have changed — address, product categories, or contact information.

4

Select your renewal validity period

Choose how many years you want to renew for — 1 to 5 years. Renewing for 5 years saves money and means you won't need to think about renewal again until 2031.

5

Upload updated documents

Upload your fresh address proof and any updated documents. All files must be PDF or JPEG, under 200 KB each. Re-scan documents even if they haven't changed — fresh scans are cleaner.

6

Pay the renewal fee

Pay the government fee (₹100 × years for Basic; ₹2,000–5,000 × years for State; ₹7,500 × years for Central) via UPI, net banking, or card. Save the payment receipt.

7

Track and respond to FSO queries

Log in daily to check for FSO queries. Respond within 24 hours. For State/Central licenses, the FSO may schedule a kitchen inspection — cooperate promptly.

8

Download your renewed certificate

Once approved, download your new FSSAI certificate from the portal. Your FSSAI number remains the same — only the expiry date changes. No need to update your platform listings.

Renewal Fees — Complete Breakdown

License type1 year2 years3 years5 years
Basic Registration ₹100 ₹200 ₹300 ₹500
State License (min) ₹2,000 ₹4,000 ₹6,000 ₹10,000
State License (max) ₹5,000 ₹10,000 ₹15,000 ₹25,000
Central License ₹7,500 ₹15,000 ₹22,500 ₹37,500
Money-saving tip Always renew for the maximum 5-year period. The government fee per year is identical whether you renew for 1 year or 5 years — but you save on consultancy costs, portal time, document preparation, and the mental overhead of tracking an annual deadline. A 5-year Basic Registration costs just ₹500 total government fee.

Late Renewal — Penalties and Process

If your FSSAI license has already expired, you are not permanently blocked — but you will face penalties. Here's how the penalty structure works:

1–30 days late
₹100/day
31–90 days late
₹500/day
91–180 days late
₹1,000/day
180+ days late
Up to ₹5L fine
Critical warning The late penalty is calculated per day from the date of expiry. A 90-day lapse on a State License can cost you ₹45,000 in late fees alone — on top of the renewal fee itself and the risk of platform suspension. This is entirely avoidable by renewing on time.

How to renew an already-expired license

The process is the same as a standard renewal, but you will see a late fee calculated on the portal based on the number of days elapsed since expiry. Pay the total amount (renewal fee + late penalty) and submit. FosCos.org handles expired license renewals regularly — call us and we'll process it as fast as possible to minimise your penalty days.

Don't Let Your License Lapse

FosCos.org handles FSSAI renewals end-to-end — documents, portal, FSO follow-up. Renew in 7 days for Basic, 30 days for State.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your 14-digit FSSAI number remains exactly the same after renewal — only the expiry date on your certificate changes. You do not need to update your Swiggy or Zomato listings, packaging, or any other materials. The number is permanent for your registered premises.
Yes. If your turnover has crossed ₹12 lakhs annually, you must upgrade to a State License. This is done as a modification request rather than a standard renewal. FosCos.org handles upgrade + renewal as a combined process. Do not simply renew as Basic if you've exceeded the turnover threshold — this creates a compliance gap.
Yes. Address corrections are filed as a modification request. If you're also due for renewal, FosCos.org can file the modification and renewal simultaneously — saving you time and keeping your license valid continuously. Do not ignore address errors; a mismatch between your certificate and actual premises is a compliance violation.
Not if you renew before expiry. Your current certificate remains valid throughout the renewal process — platforms only check your certificate's expiry date, not whether a renewal application is pending. As long as your existing certificate has not expired, your listing stays live. This is exactly why applying early matters.
Moving premises requires a fresh FSSAI registration for the new address — not a modification or renewal of the old one. Your old license covers your old address only. If you've already moved without registering the new premises, contact FosCos.org immediately. We can help you register the new premises and transition your compliance correctly.
No official grace period exists under FSSAI regulations. The day after expiry, you are technically operating without a valid license. However, FSSAI enforcement is complaint-driven and not automatic — you may not be inspected immediately. But every day you operate expired is a day of legal liability and growing late penalties. Do not rely on any grace period.
